Jalgaon train tragedy: Death toll mounts to 13; PM condoles loss of life; Centre, Maharashtra Govt, Railway Ministry announce ex-gratia
GUWAHATI, Jan 23: The death toll in the tragic accident on the railway tracks of Jalgaon in Maharashtra, mounted to 13 as police, reports stated, have identified eight bodies.
The tragic mishap took when passengers of the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express jumped onto the adjacent tracks amid rumours of a fire in the train and were run over by the Bengaluru-Delhi Karnataka Express.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the tragic accident while announcing a financial ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for those killed while the injured, he said, would be given Rs 50,000 each.
“Anguished by the tragic accident on the railway tracks in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected,” PM Modi stated in a post on ‘X’.
The Maharashtra Government, meanwhile, also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the dead while the Railway Board separately announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased, Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured and Rs 5,000 for those suffering simple injuries.
