Australia win Sydney test by 6 wickets, lift Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade
GUWAHATI, Jan 5: Australia won the fifth and final Test of the 5-match series by 6 wickets to lift the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a 10-year hiatus.
The victory in Sydney ensured a second successive World Test Championship final for the Aussies where they will face South Africa.
Chasing 162 runs for victory, Australia reached the target losing 4 wickets as Travis Head (34*) and debutant Beau Webster (39*) helped the hosts reach the target comfortably as the match ended within three days.
Earlier in the morning, India, resuming at their overnight score of 141/6 were bundled out for 157 runs, giving the hosts a target of 162 runs.
While Australian pacer Scott Boland was named Player of the Match, Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Series.
India had won the first test at Perth, registering their biggest test victory over Australia in Australia by defeating the hosts by 295 runs.
Rohit’s men, however, lost the second Test at Adelaide as Australia won by 10 wickets.
The rain-truncated third test at the Gabba in Brisbane had ended in a draw while the hosts had the last laugh at Melbourne, defeating India by 184 runs.
