GUWAHATI, Dec 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid his last respects to late former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh besides offering his condolences to the bereave family members of Dr Singh.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Minister and national BJP president JP Nadda also paid their last respects to the departed leader.

Dr Singh died at Delhi’s AIIMS hospital on Thursday at the age of 92.

Prime Minister Modi had described Dr Singh as the “most distinguished leaders”.

“Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” Prime Minister Modi said.

President Droupadi Murmu said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was one of those “rare politicians who also straddled the worlds of academia and administration with equal ease.n his various roles in public offices, he made critical contributions to reforming Indian economy. He will always be remembered for his service to the nation, his unblemished political life and his utmost humility. His passing is a great loss to all of us. I pay my respectful homage to one of the greatest sons of Bharat and convey my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers.”

The central government has announced a seven-day state mourning from December 26 to January 1, 2025 following the demise of the former Prime Minister during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all locations where it is customarily displayed, and all official entertainment will be suspended.

Assam Chief Minister DR Himanta Biswa Sarma also condoled the former Prime Minister’s demise and recalled his long association with him.

He also announced that a 7-day State mourning will also be observed in Assam till Jan 1, 2025.

His last rites will be performed with full State Honours.
