Drug peddler who ran over police constable at Sribhumi tries to flee snatching police rifle; shot in the leg, apprehended
GUWAHATI, Dec 15: A drug peddler arrested after he ran over his truck on a police constable in Sribhumi district of Assam was injured after police fired at him to prevent him from escaping from their custody.
Abhijit Sabdakar, part of a drug cartel, was arrsested in connection with the death of recruited police constable Ujjwal Borah in Sribhumi district yesterday. The young police constable was run over by a speeding mini truck killing him on the spot.
The truck had later turned turtle and drugs were recovered from the vehicle leading to the arrest of the peddler Abhijit Sabdakar.
Sabdakar was brought to the spot where he knocked down Ujjwal Borah as part of investigation and crime scene recreation. While he was taken to the place where he had dragged the young policeman after knocking him down, the arrested accused suddenly snatched the rifle of a police personal and pointed it at the police team, a statement issued by police stated.
Although he was told to drop the rifle, he did not obey the orders of the police team.
“For the safety of the police team, one round was fired in the air, but he did not drop the rifle; therefore, one round was fired into his right leg, and the accused person was apprehended,” the statement issued by police to the media stated.
The injured accused was later shifted to Silchar Medical College & Hospital where he is presently being treated for the injury he suffered in the incident.
