‘Working to protect old trees of Dighalupukhuri area…’ CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on reported move to fell trees for flyover construction
GUWAHATI, Oct 30: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that his government “is deeply committed to preserving our city’s heritage and environment while advancing infrastructure” and that the government is “sincerely working to protect the old trees in the Dighalipukhuri area”.
“I want to assure you that the government is deeply committed to preserving our city’s heritage and environment while advancing infrastructure. In constructing the flyovers from Dighalupukhuri to Noonmati, we are sincerely working to protect the old trees in the area. I urge all stakeholders to allow the Public Works Department a few days to explore an alternative proposal and assess its feasibility,” he wrote on ‘X’.
Chief Minister Sarma’s announcement comes a day after hundreds of people on Tuesday took to the streets to voice their opposition to the government’s decision to bring down several trees around the historic Dighalipukhuri for the construction of the flyover connecting Noonmati to the Reserve Bank of India.
