Cricket: OTD in 2005, MS Dhoni smashed his highest ODI score of 183* against Sri Lanka

GUWAHATI, Oct 31: Nineteen years ago, on this day (Oct 31, 2005), former Captain Cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni played one of the most swashbuckling innings of his one-day career, probably among the very best alongside his match-winning knock of 91 not out in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final.

Dhoni smashed 183 runs off just 145 balls against Sri Lanka at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium as the Men In Blue chased down Sri Lanka’s target of 299 runs with 23 balls to spare.

Dhoni came on to bat at No. 3 following the dismissal of master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar. After a cautious start, he started smashing the cricket ball to all corners of the field as the Lankan bowlers were caught unaware by the sudden onslaught.

His innings was laced with 15 fours and 10 huge sixes as he eclipsed Australian Adam Gilchrist’s score of 172 to set a new record for the highest individual ODI score by a wicket-keeper batter.
