Gold dream shattered! Wrestler Vinesh Phogat found 100 grams overweight, disqualified from women’s 50kg wrestling final
GUWAHATI, Aug 7: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Women’s 50kg Wrestling finals for being overweight.
“She was found overweight by 100gm this morning. The rules do not allow this and she has been disqualified,” an Indian coach said.
“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand,” the Indian Olympic Association stated.
Vinesh on Tuesday night became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic gold medal bout after storming into the finals of the 50kg weight women’s wrestling event.
