Assam: Pro-talks group of ULFA likely to sign peace agreement soon

The most awaited peace pact between both state and central governments and a pro-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is likely to be signed by the end of this year or in January next year.

Two senior leaders of the pro-talk faction of ULFA are currently in Delhi.

Anup Chetia, a senior leader of a pro-talk faction of ULFA who is currently in Delhi told ANI over the phone that the talks between ULFA and the government are now in the final stage

“We are expecting that the peace pact between ULFA and the government will likely be signed by the end of this year. We are very much hopeful that, the government will sign the peace accord this year,” Anup Chetia said.

He further said that along with him Sashadhar Choudhary, another senior leader of a pro-talk faction of ULFA is also currently in Delhi.

In 2011, ULFA submitted a 12-point charter of demands to the government which includes constitutional and political arrangements and reforms, protection of the identity and material resources of the local indigenous population of Assam.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also indicated that the talks between ULFA and the government are at an advanced stage and an agreement with the outfit could be signed in December or January.

The Chief Minister said that the peace agreement with the pro-talk ULFA group will incorporate political, economic and cultural safeguards as well as land rights.
