State of emergency declared in New York as torrential rain causes flash flood

A state of emergency has been announced in New York City after heavy rainfall led to flash flooding, which caused disruption to several subway services in the city and at least one terminal of the LaGuardia Airport had to be shut down.

𝙆𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙮 𝙃𝙤𝙘𝙝𝙪𝙡, 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙔𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙤𝙧, said that around five inches of rain poured in a few areas of the city overnight and about seven inches more of rainfall is due. “This is a dangerous, life-threatening storm,” she said.

Taking to the social media platform X, formerly called Twitter, she said, “𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙔𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮, 𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙄𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙪𝙙𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙮 𝙙𝙪𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙬𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙤𝙣.” She added, “Please take steps to stay safe and remember to never attempt to travel on flooded roads.”

Several images and videos circulating on social media showed people walking through water up to their knees as the streets and subway services were affected due to the rainfall, as per BBC.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), in a post on X, said, “𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙧𝙪𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙙𝙪𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡. 𝙋𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙡.”

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙔𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 (𝙉𝙔𝙋𝘿) has also declared several road closures due to the flooding conditions.

About 18 million people currently living in the New York metropolitan area and several other cities around the East Coast have found themselves under flood warnings and advisories announced by the weather service.
