Deadliest fire in Jorhat in decades, blaze at shopping hub brought under control after 14 hours

A massive fire broke out at Marwari Patty Thakurbari locality in the commercial hub of Assam’s Jorhat town on Wednesday night.

The fire broke out at a business establishment storing plastic and highly-inflammable materials around 10 pm yesterday. The blaze engulfed the whole building and soon spread to other buildings.

Several cylinders exploded one after another causing the fire to spread further.

The fire also spread to a couple of residential buildings, gutting them completely.

Around 35 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire as firemen battled for more than 14 hours to finally bring it under control.

According to initial estimates, property worth several crore was gutted in the blaze that is now being said to be the biggest and the deadliest in more than a decade.

However, there have been no casualties or injuries with all residents safely evacuated.

Although the fire has been brought under control, the blaze is yet to be completely doused with plumes of smoke still bellowing out from the charred remains till around noon.
