DU Ragging Horror: Three PNGB hostel wardens relieved from duty

GUWAHATI: Dibrugarh University on Wednesday announced that it has relieved the three wardens of PNGB hostel of their duties in connection with the horrific ragging incident.

Dibrugarh University Vice Chancellor Prof Jiten Hazarika said, “We have relieved the three wardens of PNGB hostel from their duties. Further action will be taken after the inquiries are completed if any lapses on their part are found.”

The wardens who have been relieved of their duties are Dr. Dibyajyoti Dutta, Palash Dutta and Abu Mushtaq Hussain.

Notably, Anand Sharma, an M. Com 1st semester student and a resident of PNGB hostel was tortured and beaten up by some students of the University. Unable to bear the inhuman torture, Anand had jumped from the second floor of the hostel on Saturday night. He is battling for his life in ICU.

Four hostel boarders have so far been arrested by Dibrugarh Police after a case with Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma directing cops to take stringent action against all those found to be involved in the case.

Assam police have arrested Simanta Hazarika, Niranjan Thak, Pranjit Baruah and Subhrajit Baruah while Rahul Chetri, the main accused, is still on the run.

Dibrugarh University, which has come under a lot of flak for its inept handling of the case, had temporarily suspended 22 students from the University for their involvement in the ragging case.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday lambasted the University for its utter failure to handle the “serious offence” properly.

However, a magisterial enquiry has begun yesterday and Registrar Dr. Paramananda Sonowal, Dean of Students Affairs Dr. Surajit Borkakoty and Chief Warden Dr. Kalyan Bhuyan deposed before ADC and Magistrate Sanghamitra Baruah conducting the probe.
