Injured Mariani elephant pulled out of rivulet 36 hours after being hit by speeding train dies
The wild elephant, who was rescued by the forest department after being hit by a train, succumbed to injuries in Assam’s Mariani on Wednesday.
The elephant was suffering in a pool of mud for around 36 hours after sustaining injuries.
According to sources, the elephant was being treated by one doctor in Mariani and a team of doctors from Kaziranga was supposed to arrive in the place today for further treatment of the injured elephant. Unfortunately, the elephant succumbed to injuries in the morning.
It is alleged that the elephant died due to prolonged rescue operations by the forest department and late medical attention.
The injured wild elephant was later found in a pool.
On Tuesday, the Forest department officials were successful in pulling out the wild elephant from the mud of a pool that had been hit by a speeding train in Assam’s Titabor on Sunday.
Following a prolonged struggle, forest officials were able to rescue it. They lifted the elephant with the help of a JCB and put it on a truck.
Notably, a herd of elephants was crossing a railway line near Kharikatia railway station in Jorhat district when a speeding Rajdhani Express train passing through hit a female elephant and her calf.
While the calf, aged around 10 months, died on the spot, the female elephant survived even after it was earlier thought to have been killed.
Locals woke to the squeals of the elephant which reportedly broke its leg in the accident.
Forest department officials arrived at the spot, however, rescue operations were delayed due to bad weather conditions.
