Nine PFI activists held in Assam as nationwide raids continue, more arrests likely
At least nine activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) have been arrested from Assam following the nationwide raids launched by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) amid terror-funding accusations against the organization.
While two persons have been arrested after raids were carried out in Hatigaon and Dispur localities of Guwahati, four PFI activists have been arrested from Nagarbera while one each have been held at Karimganj, Barpeta and Baksa districts respectively.
PFI leader and North East regional secretary of the outfit Aminul Haque was arrested from House number 26 at Friends Path in Hatigaon area of Guwahati, another PFI leader identified as Farhad Ali was arrested from Dispur.
Haque, who had reportedly been detained several times in the past, was residing with his wife and two children for the past five years as a tenant.
Sources said the number of arrested activists of the outfit could rise further as raids have been said to continue in several places.
NIA has taken the PFI leaders into custody in connection with terror funding, organizing training camps, and radicalizing people join proscribed organizations.
