CWG 2022: Huge setback for India, Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain bows out in quarters
Guwahati: Olympic bronze medallist Borgohain out-punched by last edition’s silver medallist Rosie Eccles of Wales, failed to go past the quarter-final on Thursday.
A major upset as Borgohain, who won bronze at the Olympics a year ago, loses to Rosie Eccles of Wales in the women’s 70kg quarterfinals.
In the women’s 70 kg category, Wales’ Rosie Eccles defeated Lovlina Borgohain by a scoreline of 2-3.
In the opening round, Lovlina won by 4-1 but in the last two rounds, she lost steam as Eccles came up with a brave show.
However, the momentum was certainly slipping away from Lovlina as Eccles gave it her best in the round to win the round 5-0.
Lovina’s Commonwealth Games campaign comes to an end in disappointment.
Earlier, on July 28, Lovlina was embroiled in a controversy as she was left stranded after leaving the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony midway.
She had a difficult preparation process since she alleged harassment and that Sandhya Gurung, her personal coach, was turned away from the Birmingham Games Village.
Lovlina eventually got her way because the Games Village approved her personal coach accreditation.
After taking home the bronze medal at the Olympics in Tokyo, Lovlina has had a difficult time since then.
She failed to medal at the World Championships in Istanbul earlier this year, crashing out in the pre-quarters.
