Manipur Landslide: 48 bodies recovered, 14 still missing; Fresh landslide hinders rescue operation

Guwahati: Rescue operations were halted briefly after a fresh landslide occurred at Tupul in Manipur’s Noney district. As per inputs, the landslide occurred just a short while back.

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of two more territorial army men were flown to Bagdogra from Manipur on Tuesday.

A wreath-laying ceremony was also held at the Imphal airport where rich tributes were paid to the brave hearts identified as Subedar Sajit Subha and Havaldar Chandan Gurung.

It may be mentioned here that relentless rescue operations continue on the 6th consecutive day today to trace the remaining 14 people who are still missing in Manipur’s Noney district.

While a total of 48 bodies have been recovered so far, the search continues for the other missing persons who are feared buried under the debris.

On Monday, 6 more bodies were recovered comprising one territorial army jawan and 5 civilians.

Despite challenges faced due to intermittent rains, rescue workers from the Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, and SDRF are bracing all odds in the search operations.

Worth mentioning here, that even as inclement weather has been a major hindrance for the rescue workers in the search operations, authorities have reassured time and again that the operations will continue till the last person is traced.

Notably, the Army is using high-tech equipment such as the ‘Through Wall Imaging Radar’ which can detect bodies buried up to 20 meters below, in the search operations.

The Noney district tragedy took place on the intervening night of June 29 – June 30 at the company location of the 107 territorial armies deployed near Tupul Railway Station for the protection of the under-construction railway line from Jiribam to Imphal. The entire camp was buried under the debris.

Meanwhile, Following the massive landslide, the Ijei river flowing through Noney town has been completely obstructed causing a dam-like situation upstream.
