Assam: Police launch massive crackdown on jihadis, 10 arrested in past 24 hours

GUWAHATI, July 28: Assam Police have launched a massive crackdown on fundamentalist activities in the State and have foiled a massive jihadi network in Assam’s Morigaon district by arresting one dreaded jihadi operative besides detaining eight Madrassa teachers from Moirabari. At least 10 persons with links with Bangladesh-based fundamentalist organization Ansarul Bangla have been arrested so far

Morigaon Police arrested a jihadi named Mufti Mustafa who was running a private madrassa from his residence besides picking up eight other Madrassa teachers for questioning.

Jamiul Hudda Madrassa, the madrassa run by Mustafa which was reportedly used as a hub of fundamentalist activities, has also been sealed by Police.

“A team of CRPF and police came to our house around midnight on Tuesday. They inquired us about my brother Mufti. My father took them to his house from where he was picked up by police. They also carried searches in our houses and the madrassa my brother had set up in 2018,” Mufti Mustafa’s younger brother Jakaria told News Live.

It may be mentioned here that Mufti Mustafa had gone to Bhopal where he took religious teaching and after returning home, he set up the madrassa at his home.

Police sources said Mustafa was probably radicalized during his stay in Bhopal and there are reports of his links with Bangladesh-based fundamentalist organizations.

Meanwhile, multiple raids have also been carried out at Hatigaon in Guwahati and Barpeta with Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma claiming that the police have busted another big jihadi module in Barpeta.

While seven arrests have been made in Barpeta, at least one person was arrested from Hatigaon, police sources said.
