Assam: Govt fixes max speed limit on various categories of roads
Guwahati: After examining the opinions and views of different stakeholders regarding the proposal of speed limits vis-à-vis types of roads in the state for various modes of vehicles, the Governor of Assam has fixed the maximum speed on various categories of roads and various classes of motor vehicles in the state.
The order comes into effect on June 2, 2022.
As per the government notification, the max speed limit on a 4-lane divided carriageway for passenger vehicles (Non-transport) comprising not more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat has been fixed at 100 km/hour.
For such category vehicles, the maximum speed limit on roads within municipal limits and other roads shall be 60 km/h and 80 km/h, respectively.
Similarly, the max speed limit for passenger vehicles (transport) comprising not more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat has been fixed at 80 km/h on the 4-lane divided carriageway, 70 km/h on other roads and 60 km/h on roads within municipal limits.
Motor vehicles (both transport and non-transport) used for the carriage of passengers comprising nine or more seats in addition to the driver’s seat (M2 and M3 category vehicles), the maximum speed limit on 4-lane divided carriageway, other roads and roads within municipal limit has been fixed at 80 km per hour, 70 km per hour and 60 km per hour, respectively.
The speed limit for vehicles used for the carriage of goods (N category vehicles) has been fixed at 70 km/h, 60 km/h and 40 km/h, whereas, three-wheeled (passenger goods) vehicles will have to maintain the speed limit on 4-lane divided carriageway by 50 km/h, 50 km/h on other roads and 40 km/h on roads within municipal limits.
The Motorcycle riders will have to maintain speed limits by upto 80 km/h on a 4-lane divided carriageway, 60 km/h on other roads and 50 km/h on roads within municipal limits.
The notification also stated that for the greater interest of public safety, speed limits at specific locations such as accident-prone zones, black spots, areas under construction, areas requiring modification in engineering aspects, market areas, and school areas etc, the speed limits shall be decreased which shall be demarcated with speed limit signages installed by the concerned road owing agencies across the roads and the same shall be mandatory for compliance.
