Assam Floods: 4 More Persons Dead in Last 24 Hours, Death Toll Reaches 121
Guwahati: At least four more people, including two children, died in floods in Assam in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 121 on Saturday. One death each was reported from Barpeta, Cachar, Darrang and Golaghat districts.
Though the overall flood situation in Assam improved slightly on Saturday, over 25.10 lakh people in 2,894 villages across 27 districts of the state- Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur and Udalguri- still remain affected by the floods.
Barpeta continued to be the worst-affected district with nearly 7.50 lakh people being affected, followed by over 5.11 lakh people yet to get respite from the flood fury.
On the other hand, over 2.33 lakh people are still languishing in 637 relief camps. Over 80,346 hectares of agricultural land remain affected by the flood waters.
The flood situation in Silchar town in Southern Assam’s Cachar district continued to remain grim with several areas still being submerged for the sixth consecutive day. A breach in an embankment at Bethukandi on June 17, around four km from the town, left over two lakh people severely affected by the flood waters.
Though Barak river adjoining Silchar town is receding, the plight of the people remains unchanged with no electricity and acute scarcity of drinking water for the past six days.
Nearly 2.78 lakh people are affected in the district with 96,689 people suffering in Silchar town alone. A total population of 1,09,868 are taking refuge in 224 relief camps in the district, including 25,148 people in Silchar.
River Brahmaputra and Kopili continued to flow above the danger level mark in Dhubri and Nagaon districts respectively.
