Assam CM accuses Rahul Gandhi of encouraging ‘separatist elements’ by describing India as Union of States

GUWAHATI:  Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is “encouraging secessionist elements” by describing India as a Union of States, and that there is no difference between him and an insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I).

He was speaking at a media conclave by RSS-linked weeklies Panchjanya and Organiser.

Responding to Organiser editor Prafulla Ketkar’s questions about Rahul Gandhi describing India as a Union of States, Sarma said India is culturally one.

“Identifying India as just a Union of States is tantamount to challenging our 5000-year-old rich civilization… If India is a Union of States, then it means you are disputing everything India has.

“Now Rahul Gandhi is making people understand this (that India is a Union of States), he is encouraging secessionist elements. Maybe someone from JNU is tutoring him… there is no difference between his language and that of ULFA besides English,” he said.

CM Sarma also said that betraying the Gandhi family is seen as a betrayal of the country in Congress, while for the BJP, the country is paramount.

Meanwhile attacking All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi who rejected the need for Uniform Civil Code in the country, Sarma said it will be in the interest of Muslims to close madrasas and implement Uniform Civil Code.

Earlier, Owaisi rejected the need for Uniform Civil Code in the country and said “It (Uniform Civil Code) is not required in this country… Law Commission has opined that a UCC is not required.”
