BJP takes massive lead in Guwahati Municipal Polls, AJP, AAP open accounts
Guwahati: The counting of votes for the crucial Guwahati Municipal Corporation elections has begun. The counting is underway at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre. Till the filing of the report, the BJP & AGP has won or are leading in 35 seats
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party and Asom Jatiya Parishad have opened their accounts with wins at wards no 42 and 1 respectively.
A total of 197 candidates contested the civic body polls in 57 wards. Results for 3 wards had already been decided before the polls. Notably, this was the first GMC election where EVMs were used.
Coming to the political parties, the BJP contested in 53 wards amongst which the party has already won uncontested in 3 wards. Meanwhile, Congress contested in 55 wards, while the Asom Gana Parishad or AGP contested in 7 wards. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party fielded candidates in 39 wards and the Asom Jatiya Parishad in 25 wards.
