Assam Police arrests Gujarat MLA, Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani over tweet
Guwahati: Gujarat Congress leader and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police over a tweet on Wednesday (April 20) night.
He was arrested by the police from Palanpur Circuit House at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday.
According to a Instagram post by Mevani’s team, he was arrested from Palanpur circuit house and was taken to Ahmedabad last night. From there, he will be taken to Guwahati.
“Police yet to share FIR copy with us. Prima facie, we have been informed about some cases filed against him in Assam,” his team wrote on Instagram.
According to news agency ANI, Assam police arrested Mevani over his tweets claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who “considers Godse as God, should appeal for peace and harmony against communal clashes in Gujarat.”
“Kokrajhar police arrested Congress Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani from Palanpur Circuit House last night,” Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Thube Prateek Vijay Kumar told news agency ANI.
As per ANI, a case was lodged against Mevani under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), section 153A (promoting enmity between communities, 295A, 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and sections of the Information Technology Act.
Mevani’s Twitter account shows that two tweets posted by him on April 18 have been withheld on ‘legal demand’.
Meanwhile, supporters of Mevani have planned a protest against his arrest in Delhi today.
