Celebrate Bhogali Bihu At Home: Assam CM Urges People As Covid Cases Surge
The Chief Minister also urged the eligible beneficiaries to get vaccinated against Covid-19

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday has appealed to the citizens to celebrate the upcoming Bhogali Bihu within their families as Covid-19 cases continue to surge.
"We can celebrate the Bhogali Bihu within our families, in our own households. The curfew will continue during Bihu too. On Uruka, if you are planning to visit someone's home for the feast, you will have to prepone the gettogether as you will have to return home by 10 pm. In your own household, you can enjoy throughout the night," Sarma said while announcing the new SOP for containment of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Chief Minister also urged the eligible beneficiaries to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
Sarma also appealed to the people to refrain from being in large gatherings. He stated that while outside, people must maintain social distance and wear masks.
"Wearing of face mask is compulsory in all public places and non-compliance of the same will attract fine," he said.
Any person not wearing the face mask and/ or spitting in public places shall be fined to the tune of Rs 1000, according to an order issued by the Assam Disaster Management Authority.
“We have to take precautions for our own safety," Sarma said.
The Assam government has revised the timings of night curfew to 10 pm to 6 am, starting from January 8.
Sarma also announced that only fully vaccinated people will be allowed to enter hotels, restaurants, government offices, shopping malls, multiplexes in the State.
Bhogali Bihu, also called Magh Bihu, is a harvest festival, which marks the end of harvesting season in the month of Magh. (January–February). The festival is marked by feasts and bonfires. People erect makeshift huts, known as 'Meji' and 'Bhelaghar', from bamboo, leaves, and thatch, and in 'Bhelaghar' they eat the food prepared for the feast and then burn the huts the next morning.
Assam has been reporting a sharp increase in daily Covid cases for the last 10 days. A total of fresh 844 Covid-19 cases were recorded in the State on January 6, taking the cumulative tally to 6,23,332.
